Wide receiver Dedric Ward was a depth chart casualty at the conclusion of Patriots [stats, news]' training camp in August.

The team's current lack of depth at his position is the reason he's back. The Pats re-signed Ward yesterday and he was on the practice field in the afternoon.

With David Patten [news] on injured reserve and Troy Brown [news] and David Givens [news] sitting out practice the last two days, the Patriots needed to replenish their depleted receiving corps in time for Sunday's game at Houston. Former 49er and Jaguar J.J. Stokes was signed on Tuesday.

Stokes must quickly immerse himself in the nuances of offensive coordinator Charlie Weis' offense while Ward only needs a refresher course. Ward said he is ready to work with Brown, Givens, Deion Branch [news] and Bethel Johnson [news] against the Texans. Brown (leg) and Givens (hamstring) remain questionable
