There are six shopping weeks left until the 2003 coaches draft, and the Bears are on the clock. If the obvious is true and coach Dick Jauron is history, then ask yourself one crucial question: Are the Bears ready to hire a new coach?

The answer here is no. Not until they take care of a couple of important pieces of business in the next few weeks. It's essential that team president Ted Phillips and general manager Jerry Angelo sign contract extensions if the Bears have any shot of filling a vacant coaching position in a swift and timely fashion.

The time has come for the franchise to put the horse before the cart
