The Green Bay Packers have become a modern-day meat grinder with Brett Favre now cast as a supporting actor.

Packer coach Mike Sherman congratulates Javon Walker after a first-quarter TD catch. The 66-yard reception was the Packers' longest pass play this season.

The stunning, even unfathomable transformation of the Packers from a passing team to a running team continued apace Sunday in the gloom and slop of Lambeau Field with their 20-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

"You hate to say this, but you've got to put it in Brett's hands," 49ers secondary coach Brett Maxie said. "It's unbelievable the way things have turned around for those guys."

You'd have questioned the sanity of an opposing defensive coach who would have said such a thing during the last 11 seasons. Today, it's true.

In some ways the Packers won in spite of Favre, whose two first-half interceptions put the defense in the shadow of its own goalposts and whose third pick inside the San Francisco 25 late in the third quarter waylaid an opportunity to put away the 49ers early.
