That distinction belongs to Buffalo running back Carlton Chester "Cookie" Gilchrist.

No. 34 was the AFL's most valuable player in 1962. But 10 weeks into the 1964 season, Gilchrist was waived by the Bills. Here's what happened: After carrying the ball just five times in the first half of a November game against Boston, Cookie got fed up, and he sent in backup Willie Ross to take his place. Cookie refused to go back in, and the Bills lost for the first time that year. Two days later, head coach Lou Saban fired Gilchrist. He was the league's leading rusher at the time.
