The Patriots appear ready to go down the stretch with an unproven commodity at punter. As unattractive as that sounds, it's obviously more appealing to Bill Belichick than the existing alternative.

According to sources, the Pats have settled on rookie Brooks Barnard to take over for veteran Ken Walter, who was released yesterday after failing to climb out of a season-long slump.

Barnard has never played in an NFL game. He was released from Chicago's training camp during the first round of cuts in August and didn't land a job until yesterday, when he apparently had a successful tryout at Gillette Stadium. As a senior last year at Maryland, Barnard averaged 43.1 yards per kick with 13 downed inside the 20.
