Jauron will wait to decide on Rex

The promotion of Rex Grossman to starting quarterback will wait, at least another 24 hours.

The most anticipated change at the position in five seasons by coach Dick Jauron, who has already shuffled quarterbacks 22 times, will happen on his timeline. He was testy when asked to analyze it Monday after the Bears' remote playoff aspirations, if not a lot more, had been squashed the day before in a 34-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

''Obviously, it was a very disappointing day, not just to lose to Green Bay, which was disappointing in and of itself, but to have our playoff hopes end was disheartening for everybody,'' he said.

Jauron has made it clear the last several weeks that consideration of Grossman would not begin in earnest until the team had been eliminated from postseason contention. While that time has arrived, there comes uncertainty as to why he would consider sticking with Kordell Stewart or Chris Chandler, who have played a role in the 5-8 mess the team finds itself in. Whether his delay in announcing a decision has to do with trying to confuse Sunday's opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, is anyone's guess.
