From the Golden Dome to the Golden Knights?
Vikings defensive coordinator George O'Leary might not have followed the most desirable or well-imagined trail, but he continued to reclaim a 30-year career as a football coach Monday when he accepted the head coaching job at the University of Central Florida.
Until Monday morning, Central Florida in Orlando was best known for producing Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Monday, the university made news by hiring O'Leary, the 56-year-old New York Irishman known as much for an abrupt firing from Notre Dame as for his coaching ability.
By giving O'Leary a second chance, Central Florida showed it wants to compete with the state's better-known football programs. He agreed to a five-year contract worth about $700,000 a year.
