Hey- I was NEVER a Whale fan- Sabres from day one!!!!!


However- I do wish there was an NHL team in Hartford. Yeah, Boston is close but it's so expensive and difficult to get downtown from where I live.

ah the memories....beers at Chuck's Cellar prior to the game.....my brother Scott so drunk he jumped up to cheer a goal and tumbled down three rows of seats into someone's lap...

When i would yake in Civic center events, I'd usually be hitting the Union St bars.

True story about my freind Jeff Nese-


He was waiting on tables at a restauraunt called Hot Tomatoes on Union st- an upscale Italian place.

Since Hartford only has a few decent places near the rink, hockey players would frequent the place for dinner. One day, not long after the Paul Coffey trade with Detroit that brought him to the whale (for Brendan Shanahan I beleive) the Rangers were in town.

Thr Rangers were loaded with ex-Oilers (Gretzky, Anderson, Kurrie, Beukaboom, - [Messier was in Vancouver at the time] and they met up with Coffey at this restauraunt for a mini - reunion.


My buddy Jeff waits on their table- very professional-like, not making a fuss over their celebrity status (basically Gretzky's). At the end of the dinner, after presenting Gretzky with the check, he he says-
"Thank you very much- i hope you enjoyed your stay. Umm.... sir...The Boys in the kitchen an the staff are honored to have you here today- someone of such stature. (He hands him a bottle of wine for him to autograph the label) Could you sign this?

Gretzky agrees, being the nice guy he is.


Jeff responds "OH THANK YOU, MARK MESSIER! - You are my favorite player! Those 3 goals against the Devils in the playoffs (1994) were awesome"


Of course Gretzky is looking at him like he's an escaped mental patient and the rest of the players are howling. I guess you had to be there
