For the Chargers, it's one question answered and several dozen to go.
General manager A.J. Smith yesterday ended speculation regarding Marty Schottenheimer's future by announcing the Chargers coach would return for the 2004 season.
The move had been rumored for weeks, but Smith had said no decision would be announced until after the season, which ends Sunday when the Chargers (3-12) play host to Oakland (4-11) at Qualcomm Stadium. He changed his mind recently after being inundated with questions.
"I'd love to do everything at the end of the season," Smith said, "but unfortunately it's been ridiculous as far as national and local (media) people wanting to know.
"So I went to (club president) Dean (Spanos) and said, 'There never was an issue, Coach was always coming back; let's just do this now and end it.' That's the reason I did it, so no one would ask anymore. We are not in the market for a head coach."
