Let's play a game. Name a Sabre that is your eyes, Free Agent or Draft Pick, Past or Present that was a HUGH bust. Top Draft Pick? Free Agent? Traded for Player? I can't think of many Free Agents because the Sabres never sign a top notch free agent.

Let me start.

Jiri Dudacek, all-time hands down bust. Never even played a game for Buffalo, a wasted draft pick

A wasted pick for sure. A gamble that did not pay off.

But too me, a bust is a guy who just never panned out. Dudacek was a communist country player drafted before the iron curtain fell. It was a longshot to get him over here in the first place. The Sabres were not deterred, and drafted Alex Mogilney- he worked out.....

Nothing because the Sabres couldn't pay for what he was worth.

What about that defenseman Wilson...the one we traded away to get Rhett Warrener AND a draft pick? Talk about a one-sided trade. The guy was a waste and the draft pick alone would have made it a good trade...the fact that Warrener was such a solid player for us made it a highway robbery on our part. :D

John Tucker was a solid role guy. I don't remember anything being expected from him.

I never know what youre talking about dude...

As for my busts.....

Morris Titanic, Paul Cyr, Joel Savage, Norm Lacombe, Adam Creighton, Mikael Andersson, Shawn Anderson, Greg Brown, Wayne Primeau, Barrett Heisten, David Cooper....etc.

Just about every draft from Bowman and Meehan were duds. I can't believe we had drafts in 82 and 83 with 3 first round picks each and three of the guys above were in those drafts. It looks like Darcy is assembling his set of duds.. But, its too early to tell.

So far with Darcy: Artem Kruikov, Andrew Peters (WE WASTED A SECOND ROUND PICK ON THIS DOPE), and Norm Milley. I guess you can toss Brian Campbell in there too. We paid him the big bucks based on his Memorial Cup run in 99. I also heard Novotny is pulling splinters out of his ass in Roch. So happy we stocked the minors with such talent.

1982 was a dud year? Housley and Andreychuck- 2,900 games- 900+ goals, 1,500 + assists, 40+ seasons between them

Both are borderline HOF candidates

1983 got Barasso- another great pick. Lacomb was a bust, Cyr was a role player- Creighton did manage 700 games and 400 points.

Considering the batting average for all NHL 1st rounders (and Sabres historical 1st rounders) 3 perrenial all-stars, 2 role players, 1 bust ain't horrific.

The best way to examine who did well in a draft is to look at who was available when you picked.

Andreychuck (613) has 60++ goals on the next best player who came out of that draft-

Pat Vrebeek (500+) Rd 3 , Doug Gilmour (450) Drafted Rd 7, Ray Ferraro (400+) Rd 3,

Other notables - Tony Granato (rd 6) Kevin Dineen (rd 3)Tomas sandstrom (Rd 2)

1983- this was an all star 1st Round - Lafontaine, Yzerman, - 2,800 goals scored by the first 8 picks alone. (Not Counting Barasso). Too bad Cam Neely went off the boards just before Buffalo picked.

This draft was ooo so close for Buffalo. the 5th, 10th, & 11th- Had any of the clubs ahead had screwed up, we coulld have had a Cam Neely and /or a Russ Courtnall.

But- there wasn't much after the top 9 went- Dave Gagner,Bob Errey

Rd 2- Claude Lemieux, Peter Zezel

Rd 4 Esa Tikkinen , Rd 6 Rick Toccett

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl1983e.html

As it was, we got Darren Puppa, Uwe Krupp, Christian Ruttu, John Tucker. If anything- from Rd 2 on it was probably one of the best drafts the Sabres have ever had.

Well Connolly hasnt played much, hes still young. I can see him as a all-star hockey player in the next few years. I know it sound VERY farfetched but, I BELIEVE!

Dozer, I see your point. But overall, in the grand scheme of things, I think with a first round pick, youre looking for superstars. I agree with Andreychuk, Barrasso and Housley being solid picks. I guess with the crapshoot that is the NHL Entry Draft not all will be superstars. Hindsight is 20/20 when seeing who you couldve picked. Its just frustrating to see.
