Jets defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, a 20-year league veteran, has been fired, ESPN.com has learned.

The dismissal of Cottrell, 56, had been rumored for weeks and, ironically, comes less than a year after he was close to becoming the San Francisco 49ers' head coach following the firing of Steve Mariucci last year.

Reports began about midseason that Jets coach Herm Edwards preferred a coordinator whose philosophies were more in line with his own, and who would use a scheme like the "cover two" popularized by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Edwards was publicly supportive of Cottrell, most team insiders realized a change was coming at season's end.

Didn't I report that last night? Didn't I say that GW might be hired as DC for the Jets? Man, my sources are good.

She did . She does private readins now. She also told me Miami will take Winfield, Manning, Owens, Woody, Kearse and will still have enough cap for trading up the draft and signing the first five draftees.
