Yeah you may of beat us, but NASA is using lots of invaluable Canadian technology, without it, the Rover would never have been able to get there in the first place.

Mission scientists yesterday chose the first exploration target for Spirit — a dusty depression they dubbed Sleepy Hollow — using 3-D, black-and-white images captured by the Canadian-built image sensors and transmitted across 170 million kilometres of space.

Yet even the first low-resolution black-and-white Mars photos from Sunday created excitement at the Eastern Townships chip-manufacturing plant — called a foundry in high-tech jargon — where Groulx is a product manager for the international semi-conductor and electronics company with headquarters in Waterloo

We wouldn't be able to see a thing if it weren't for the Canadian technology on-board.

Do you get the impression that the border is artificial? If you are a heavy beer drinker, tea drinker and scone in the afternoon eater, or ask only eh questions then you live in the 51st state. If you burp or fart in public, have an accent that only people within 100 miles of you understand, or think yourself superior then you live in one of the other 50 states.

Ð
01-06-2004, 02:31 PM
Oh yeah...tell that to US Immigration, who give a whole new meaning to "give US the finger(print)" by treating travellers as criminals.

socalfan
01-06-2004, 02:34 PM
But that really isn't any different than when someone from the lower 50 like NY goes to Indiana. Security is just handled by a different element in the society.

LOL!!! This coming from a country that will turn drivers away at the border if they have had a DUI anytime in their life? I had a friend refused passage through Canada on a trip to Alaska 2 years ago because he had a DUI back in the 70's. I guess getting a DUI 30 years ago makes him a criminal

BTW....taking 1 minute to have a digital fingerprint and a picture taken is hardly being treated as a criminal.

If people can't understand we need to take basic steps to police who comes into OUR country, they can just stay away.

One other thing...have you ever been overseas and seen what it takes to gain access to some countries? It's literally one step short of an interogation.

Ð
01-06-2004, 03:06 PM
Actually, I have been overseas. You name the country & I've probably been there.

All I have to do is flip them my Canadian passport & breeze right through. I was actually thinking of getting dual British/Canadian citizenship (Tania's British) so I can go through the non-interrogation lines while you suckers get the anal probe ;)

As far as DUI, It's a criminal record. You are barred from crossing north just as I would be barred from crossing south until you get a pardon after a criminal conviction.

ArcticWildMan
01-06-2004, 03:24 PM
The US does not restrict people from entering the US for a DUI.

DUI is not even on the same plane as a "criminal" act.

As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure the US restricts entry except for the most severe criminal crimes like murder/rape. My Mother who is a naturalized US citizen was never asked about a criminal record when she entered the US (unlike the process when we entered Canada)

ticatfan
01-06-2004, 03:29 PM
So we are wrong on who we let in,but you are not wrong on how you treat people going in.I should not have to have my fingerprints taken if I have not broken the law. You can't have it both ways.:)

ArcticWildMan
01-06-2004, 03:32 PM
Typical Ticat..twisting things around to try and portray the US as a bad guy.

No..I was just pointing out how foolish D's whining was when you guys treat people with a DUI as a criminal and interogate people at the border as if each one was a mass murderer waiting to run rampent in your country.

Try DRIVING across the border. I have never been hassled as much as the times I have crossed into Canada heading to/from Alaska.

I will use the AK ferry system if I ever have a need to drive to the lower 48 in the future. I refuse to spend my money in Canada and help support your economy if they are going to treat me so rudely at the border.

I know of a lot of folks who feel the same way!!! Every year I run into to tourists who refuse to drive the ALCAN ever again because of the hassles they get by your border guards. They will fly up here and bypass your country altogether.

I don't quite understand the reason for such hassles. It only hurts your economy in the end. Your northern and western provinces aren't exactly rolling in money and can't afford to piss away tourist money.

Sorry Ticat, but the US does not conduct searches on moving vans and vehicles like you guys have done for years. I have seen first hand, U-hauls completely emptied and the contents left on the ground by the Canadian border people and the poor folks who owned the stuff were left to try and get it all back in so it would fit.
All of this was conducted under the "motive" that they were searching for illegal handguns. For some reason, your border folks get their jollies out of making life miserable for some Joe 6 pack who wants nothing more than to get where he's going. I don't think Joe Average in his 28 foot U-Haul filled to the gills with all his worldly belongings is a threat to the great nation of Canada. There are a lot bigger fish in the sea they can waste their time on.

Hell, my very first trip up the ALCAN, I was on military orders reporting to Alaska for duty. All I had in my truck was a duffle bag. Even after showing the border folks my military orders authorizing me to travel via the ALCAN and letting them look in my duffel bag, they still insisted on impounding my vehicle for a complete search and I was escorted to a room where I was grilled for 30 minutes about my travel through Canada. Finally they accessed some database that showed my security clearance (Top Secret/SCI) and I overheard one of them whisper to the other that they had better let me go or it could become a sticky issue with our goverment. When I left, I asked them if this was how they treated all US military people who had to travel through their country. They didn't have the guts to answer me.

Unfortunately AWM the US won't allow Canadians in the US if the have a DUI either. However Canada started the Policy shortly before the US invoke they'res. In retaliation I suspect. Don't know for sure I go see If I can find out.

Yup. It was a tit for tat instituted after numerous Americans were refused passage through Canada. I know that the Alaska troopers stopped sharing drivers license info with Canada because so many folks were getting stranded one side of the border or another.

I weny accross the Border at Pigeon River Border Crossing one night in my Conversion Van. They had 8 Canadian Customs Officers there, this was at 2 o'clock in the Morning!!!. The litterally Emptied my Van of anything that was not bolted down and then I had to completely empty my wallet! (which I have never had to do in ANY other province). They then got my laptop and demanded that I give them the password to log onto it. They went thru Directory by Directory. Theu got to my Companies Financial Software and once again Demaned that I give them my password. That was the the last straw, we were now going to butt heads!!!!. I refused and told them they had no business looking at my Financial info. They said "Well we just might have to not allow you in our Country" I said FINE I turn around and drive back home, I was just comming into your G** Damn country to do training for your Dumb Ass People. And You can call Bowater and tell them why I'm not there!!Several of them talked among themselves and decided that my Companies Software wasn't that important Software wasn't that important.

Needless to say I was seeing Red after I put everything back and Left the Border................Bitter ...Damn Straight!!!

I flew Toronto-Tampa a couple years back for a Bucs Redskins playoff game.

The US immigration officer insisted that (in his pea brain) I was going down to "work at the game", held me up for a good 45 mins...I almost missed my flight. Turns out he didn't like my passport entry that had me travelling to Thailand, Britain and France a few years back.

That same year I was going Ottawa to RR in DC & was unemployed at the time. That threw the pinhead US immigration officer for a loop...he held my my wife, kids & myself for @ 30 minutes while he talked about my passport.

After 30 minutes, I raised a stink, asked to see a supervisor and told him to either charge me with something, or release me, that I didn't have the time for his officer's fishing expedition, I have a plane to catch. Tania was ****ting bricks. He apologized and let us through.

I've gone through many times at Heathrow, Gatwick, Paris, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo with maybe 1 1/2 minutes of token questioning & could have even less if I take the time to become a dual Canadian/British citizen.
