Donahoe and owner Ralph Wilson are among those who will talk with Mularkey. Donahoe said he will ask why the Steelers' offense slipped so badly this season, but it's not necessarily a negative for Mularkey.

"I'm always trying to find the good of any negative,'' Mularkey said. "To me, that's what I'm finding out, dealing with adversity made me a better coach. It probably prepared me better to be a head coach, having to deal with the season we had. It was a negative because of the overall success as a team. I learned a lot from it."

Donahoe has interviewed six people for the job, including two head coaches fired after the season, Dick Jauron of the Chicago Bears and Jim Fassel of the New York Giants. He has no plans to interview anyone after Mularkey.

"Not right now,'' Donahoe said. "We'll go through this go-around and evaluate where we are.''

If we don't have a new coach by the week's end, we are almost for sure going after Weiss, Crennel, or Smith.
