The Redskins made Williams the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the NFL, at $1.8 million a year. That's about an $800,000 raise over what Williams was getting as head coach in Buffalo. It's $100,000 more than Tampa pays its defensive chief, Monte Kiffin, formerly highest paid at his position.

Defensive coordinators are getting paid

Just once in his stint as the Buffalo Bills head coach, a three-year gig that concluded two weeks ago, did Gregg Williams earn a salary of more than $1 million. In fact, during his tenure, Williams averaged right at the seven-figure mark in terms of base salary, making him one of the NFL's lowest compensated head coaches.


His high-water mark, in 2003, was a salary of $1.1 million.


And now, as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins and Joe Gibbs, who hired Williams on Wednesday night after a hastily arranged interview, he will make more as an assistant than he did as a head coach. Apparently, that's what a 17-31 record and a move that is essentially a demotion, can get you in the NFL these days....
