NFL teams passing on Fassel

Fassel
The man who began the NFL's firing-and-hiring cycle as the hottest candidate, and who interviewed for three openings in the league, likely will be shut out.
Former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel in quick order interviewed with Washington Redskins officials (Jan. 1 and 2), met with the Arizona Cardinals (Jan. 3), and then with Buffalo Bills (Jan. 6) management. But the Redskins hired Joe Gibbs and the Cardinals went with Dennis Green.

According to league sources, Fassel had only an average session with the Bills and his attractiveness could be fading there. Bills officials, led by president and general manager Tom Donahoe, spent Thursday reviewing the seven candidates with whom they spoke.

The only other teams with vacancies are the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and Oakland Raiders. A one-time Oakland assistant, Fassel has not been contacted by Raiders ownership. There were early discussions with the Bears, but Chicago, for whatever reason, lost interest.

Could it be that he is the poster boy for mediocrity?
