The Jaguars ranked near the bottom of the NFL in nearly every major category on special teams last season.

Bill Bates and Paul McCord paid for that with their jobs Monday.

Following up on his promise to "make an adjustment or two'' in the coaching staff after a 5-11 debut, coach Jack Del Rio fired his two special teams assistants along with wide receivers coach Larry Kirksey.

Del Rio, who did not return two telephone messages seeking comment, did not announce replacements for the three assistants, all of who were fired after just one season -- Del Rio's first as an NFL head coach. Bates was special teams coordinator, while McCord was his aide.

Del Rio is expected to interview replacement candidates in person this weekend during Senior Bowl preparations in Mobile, Ala.

One of the top candidates to replace Bates, Atlanta's Joe DeCamillis, told The Times-Union on Monday that he has been rehired by new coach Jim Mora Jr. Another potential candidate, Pete Rodriguez, is available after being fired by Seattle last week.
