How do you guys think he compares to Will Smith and where do you think Udeze will go in the draft?

BillsMan80

Udeze, but there are no difference makers in this draft. Udeze is the best of a weak bunch. I compare Udeze to a poor-man's Shaun Ellis.

I think Will Smith is a good player but more of a situational pass rusher or convert him to LB like the Ravens did with Terrell Suggs last year.

Spaz, you pegged Will Smith right no, a situational pass rusher. And like I have been saying, this year's DE crop is WEAK, and lacks a difference maker.

NP, in fact, I think I'd be accurate in saying that the past few DE classes have been weak, and this year is no different.

I am not reallly sure, because I am not sold on any DE in the draft. I don't think any of them are difference makers. It all depends on what's left.

BillsMan80
01-19-2004, 02:19 PM
It all depends what WRs are left, Winslow, etc., when we pick.

No Julius Peppers in the draft, I'll pass on DE's then and get one via FA. Anything else is another Kelsay.

DraftBoy

Udezi is better than Kelsay by far and if we were to trade down to near 18-20 and take him I would be elated. Hes like Schoebel in so many ways but better at rushing the passer. Hes better than Will Smith thats for sure.

Better than Schoebel? He is untested at this level.

schobel is good, but not great, we need someone who commands double teams every time, with that schobel will have Adewale Ogunleye numbers or better. Adewale Ogunleye only had the numbers because of Taylor. We need that

BillsMan80

There are no DE's in this draft that command double teams. Overall, it's a weak DE class, so I think we cannot afford to take a DE this year in the draft, in the sense that they all are risks.

udeze does have the chance to be a difference maker imho.. because he is a junior.. he will still get stronger and learn more moves.. he is relatively green, but he also has alot more potential than all the other guys.. i would not fret if we got him..

the best comparison i can make is to albert haynesworth... he was drafted so high really on potential to play great, even though his college stats were good but not outstanding.. and though i did not want him at the time, he has become very good.

udeze had 16.5 sacks last year.. but if he came back for his senior year, he could have broken 20 imho.

Four months ago it was David Pollack. Unfortunately he had a mediocre junior season and decided to stay in school another year. Then it was Will Smith. He wasn't quite as productive as hoped, so he has fallen out of favor of late. He's still a pretty good DE. I don't think he's as much of a tweener type as some make him out to be. I think he is a true DE and played at about 260. He's supposed to be strong for his size. Udeze is the current hot commodity because he had a very good junior season with 16.5 sacks. He's a bit shorter than Smith but has a lot more body mass. Different sources report his weight anywhere from 275 to 285. He is not real fast in the 40 which is why he's not considered in the same class as Julius Peppers when he was drafted. It will be interesting to see if he can up his speed by the combine. I agree there is no compelling reason to drool over any DE in the draft. If there is no receiver who is a good value at #13 and Winslow is gone, then TD might consider Udeze. Or he might trade down.
There may be some OK DEs available later in the draft, guys like Jason Babin.

1. Udeze ( clearly the best, and will be a good DE )

2. Will Smith ( good player from good system, puts alot pressure on QB's )

3. Antawn Odom- alabama ( good size, great speed, and good athletism )

i wouldn't waste a 1st rounder on a DE in this draft.

Bruce Smith was concidered fat and out of shape when we drafted him too. That whole Ohio State defensive line is great so you have to wonder who is the biggest contributing factor on it.

There will be three Ohio State Linemen drafted, probably all three by the fifth round.

And players continue to get bigger and faster. How many 330lb OL were around when Bruce was here? Now every team has a few OL that are near or over 330. I believe Smith will be a good player in the NFL, but he may also be better suited at LB (like Boulware and Suggs in Baltimore) where his size and athleticism will cause matchup problems and work more in his favor than against him.

smith was 300lbs when he was drafted.. it is hilarious to look at rookie cards of his.. he was a porker.

Exactly that's why the comparison of Will Smith and Bruce Smith is wrong.
