Bills got a new Special Teams coach

Bobby April, essentially fired by the Rams last week when St. Louis elected not to renew his contract after three years, has agreed to become Buffalo's special-teams coach, ESPN.com has learned.

April spoke Tuesday with new Bills coach Mike Mularkey for several hours, accepted the job, then departed Wednesday to join the rest of the staff in Mobile, Ala., site of the annual Senior Bowl all-star game.

April, 50, is a 12-year league veteran. He worked previously in Atlanta (1991-93), Pittsburgh (1994-95) and New Orleans (1996-99), took a voluntary one-year hiatus in 2000 to spend more time with his family, then returned to the league with the Rams in 2001.

He replaces Danny Smith, who was not retained by the Bills. Smith was named the special teams coach in Washington.

    Pittsburgh...... what a surprise...

I can hardly wait for the William Chionski article on debunking that myth.

After reading more about him, I would have been happier if we stuck with Danny Smith.

The Rams were last in the NFL in punt coverage, allowing 15.1 yards a return, and 30th in kickoff coverage at 23.9. They gave up two touchdowns on kickoff returns, two on punt returns and one on a recovery of a fumbled punt in the end zone.

In three years under the 50-year-old April, St. Louis allowed 10 special teams touchdowns.

April nearly to lost his job in 2002, after Kansas City's Dante Hall had kickoff and punt returns for touchdowns in December. By the end of the season, head coach Mike Martz put defensive assistants in charge of the kickoff coverage unit.

I am not going to defend him but I was just listening to WNSA and said Bobby April and Mike Martz disagreed on a lot of the personnel who should play on special teams. I guess Bobby April wanted more starters to participate.

Well, that makes sense! Do you remember what happened when we decided to put starters on special teams? Our coverage teams improved DRASTICALLY. Maybe that's the reason why the Rams' coverage was so bad. It is just like 2002 with Danny Smith (remember all those touchdowns scored on us?)

I sure do remember all of those TD on returns against us.

All we did was swap garbage cans.

Agreed! We should have shown the money to Rodriquez!

Hopefully this guy can do something w/ special teams. It would be nice to get a contribution from st's at least some year.

I heard he got fired because he wanted Warner as the gunner.
