Dan Cave - Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 4:47 PM

Orchard Park, NY (WGR 55) -- Two free agents joined the Buffalo Bills' roster on Wednesday, fullback Daimon Shelton and offensive lineman Lawrence Smith.

Shelton comes to Buffalo with formidable playing experience, having suited up in 87 career games with both Jacksonville and Chicago. He spent four seasons with the Jaguars and two with the Bears. Shelton was out of football in 2003. He played collegiately at Sacramento State.

Smith had spent the past two years with the Baltimore Ravens, mostly on the practice squad. Hicks has also played in NFL Europe, spending the 2003 season with the Amsterdam Admirals.

The Bills announced that the team has signed fullback Daimon Shelton and offensive lineman Lawrence Smith.

Shelton was originally drafted by Jacksonville in the sixth round of the 1997 Draft (184th overall) out of Sacramento State. In four seasons with the Jaguars, he appeared in 59 games and made 26 starts at fullback. He signed as an unrestricted free agent with Chicago in May of 2001 and spent the 2001 and ’02 seasons with the Bears. He was released by the Bears last preseason and was out of football in 2003. He has appeared in 87 career games in the NFL (43 starts) and is 39-104-1TD rushing and 45-324-1TD receiving.

Smith played collegiately at Tennessee State and joined the Baltimore Ravens as a rookie free agent in April of 2002. He spent most of the 2002 season on the Ravens practice squad and was on the team’s 53-man roster for the final three games of that season but did not see action. He spent the 2003 NFL Europe season with the Amsterdam Admirals. He returned to the Ravens in ’03 and spent the entire year on their practice squad.

While most of these guys are training camp fodder, once in a while you'll find a diamond in the rough.

Lawrence Smith was actually in one of my draft guides and had a pretty decent Bio.

Here's hoping that Smith is one more diamond in the rough. Also, does the signing of Shelton mean that Gash will not be retained???

Let's hope he can play RG.... Pucillo has GOT to go.

And while we're at it, get rid of Teague unless he can beat out Jennings for LT. I mean, that was Teague's intended position to play when he signed here. THe GW braintrust made him a center.
