The name Cookie Gilchrist is unlikely to be mentioned at today's NFL all-star game, and that's too bad.


It would be surprising if even the most astute pro football fan under the age of 50 has heard of Gilchrist, even though he was the subject of a scandal involving renowned Cleveland coach Paul Brown in the early 1950s, even though he was one of the most dominant, colorful and versatile players in Canadian Football League history, and even though from 1962-65 he was one of the first superstars in the upstart American Football League.


It's too bad Gilchrist is all but forgotten, not only because of his legendary playing career but because he made pro football all-star game history off the field 39 years ago. He not only ought to be remembered for it, he should be celebrated for it....
