By now, Emmitt Smith expected to be either the NFL's career rushing leader or closer to it.
Smith came into the season needing 540 yards to pass Walter Payton. Looking at the Dallas Cowboys' schedule, most estimates were that Smith would have the mark by the fifth game, maybe the sixth.

But heading into No. 6 Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, Smith has made up little more than half the distance. He needs 234 yards, which at his season average of 61.2 yards per game will take until the ninth game, in early November......

I was a big fan of Payton's and basically dislike the Cowboys thanks to Jerry Jones but Emmitt, good friends with our own Squirmin' Thurman Thomas, is a class act and I hope he gets the record soon.

Panthers say Smith won't set record against them

It appears that the Carolina Panthers already have dodged Emmitt Smith's record-breaking bullet.

Everyone knows it's coming. Some unlucky NFL team is going to take it right in the heart, where it will rest in infamy.

But Smith is still 234 yards from breaking Walter Payton's all-time record for rushing yards. With the Panthers scheduled to face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Texas Stadium, the odds of Smith breaking Payton's record on the Panthers' watch rank somewhere between slim and none.
