[i]INDIANAPOLIS - The agent for Dolphins cornerback Sam Madison said he expects Miami to release Madison if he and the team are unable to work out a new contract.
''It's understood that if you don't get it done, they're not going to keep him, that's a fact,'' said agent Gene Burrough, who met with the Dolphins late Thursday night. ``They can't afford to pay any player more than $8 million against the salary cap. That's 10 percent of your cap on one guy.''
Although talk of Madison's release might be premature, the Dolphins have contacted the agents for at least two prominent cornerbacks who will be free agents.
Madison will count more than $8.1 million against the salary cap this season, which has been set at $80.6 million. The Dolphins are $15 million over the cap and must get under the cap by March 3.
Burrough said earlier this month he would not be against restructuring Madison's contract, but was adamant that Madison not take a pay cut.
''I would be surprised if they let Sam go. I expect to do a deal with them and for Sam to finish his career as a Dolphin,'' Burrough said.[/ui]
