Although the 2004 free agency period opens on March 3, Bills Director of Pro Personnel John Guy points out that the preparation for it starts close to a year in advance and is never quite completed. When the bell rings, the Bills will be ready.
"Free agency is a continuous process," Guy said. "We usually get started in April for the upcoming year. We call it projective free agency because we project the players who we think will be free agents. Sometimes contracts or incentives will take players out of free agency and other times those things will make players free agents."
With all the player movement that takes place over the course of a season, teams need a way to keep track of and maintain the ever-changing database of free agents. Bills scouting assistant, Rob Hanrahan, puts together a free agent board that engulfs the walls of Guy's office. As the waiver wire comes out, Hanrahan takes it and creates a card for the player which he then places on the board in its respective place. The board is crucial in keeping track of all of the players who will become free agents.
