The Capitals are getting rid of their whole team!

TAMPA, Feb. 28 -- There was considerably much more intrigue surrounding the players who did not participate in the Washington Capitals' game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night than there was about those who were on the ice. Stars Olaf Kolzig and Sergei Gonchar, each the subject of intense trade talks, were held out of the club's 4-2 loss at St. Pete Times Forum, which many around the NHL believe is an overt indication that those players will be dealt shortly.

I guess Toronto is looking at both of them.

    Robert Lang is gone too!

Robert Lang picked Washington over Detroit when he hit the free agent market two years ago. But the Red Wings never lost their interest in the player who is tied for the NHL scoring lead.

"He's a guy we've had our eye on for a long time," GM Ken Holland said. "We're happy to be able to bring him here."

They're getting rid of the whole freaking team!

I'm surprised the Leafs are looking at Ollie. They already have two goalies. How many does a team usually need/have? It annoys me too. Ollie has been with the Caps for as long as I can remember. They're going to die if they keep getting rid of the players. They already don't have a big fan base.

im surprised the leafs would want another goalie....they have a good starter unless they want to get rid of him.....gonchar would be a good pick up but he becomes an unrestricted free agent.... which would result a team would have to give up talent to get him and renegociate a contract....with a more than likely lockout....hes probally gonna stay in washington

Get better players? What are you guys smoking? We have such great team chemistry. Why would you want to ruin it?

I wonder how much Sergei Gonchar makes.

If Ollie the Goalie gets dealt to the Leafs, I could envision a Nooronen or Biron trade to the Caps to replace Kolzig. I'd love to grab Gonchar, even if we are out of it. (Unless he's in a last year of his deal)

The Leafs will sign Leetch & let the Avs take the big financial hit for Gonchar.

                Kolzig's a definate possibility.

                  Darcy and Larry suck.

Doug, if the Leafs do take Ollie (who will be greatly missed down here), would they still keep Kidd too? How many goalies does a team need?

I'm going to a Caps game on Saturday. It'll be weird to not know anyone on the team! I was upset to see Lang traded. What is with Detroit? They're turning into another Rags (have to have ALL the good players) but at least they don't suck the talent out of them!
I'll be pissed if Olie gets traded. He is such a big part of that franchise. But then again, so was Bondra.
It's nice to see the guys doing well on their new teams.

Kidd stinks. He's even worse than Ryan Miller.

Belfour is a bit of a risk into the playoffs with his touchy back, so they want to get a goalie that coukld start for them in a pinch.

That's what I thought too, Alyson. Bondra and Ollie have been on the Caps for as long as I can remember. The Caps already don't have a very big fan base and they're going to keep losing fans if they keep getting rid of players. I don't understand the thinking behind these moves.

Right, their fan base is the few people in Maryland (and maybe VA) that like hockey, and all the people in DC are usually rooting for the opposition! Every game I've been to (mostly vs. the Sabres) I'm definitely not the only one rooting for the Sabres.
Olie is pretty active in the community, and Bondra was so upset about leaving his "home". I guess Ted L. has had enough of "wasting" money. Maybe if they didn't charge so much for tickets and parking, more people would go to games. They are definitely unusual moves, but they may pay off in a few years.

I think that the Capitals will be one of the first teams "Contracted" from the new NHL.
