    Free Agency First Night Tracker

Going to try and post all the happenings late tonight on this thread-

Kleinsausser off the boards- Re-signs with Vikes

Flush with plenty of salary cap room, the Minnesota Vikings put some of it to good use Tuesday night, reaching a contract agreement with Jim Kleinsasser, ESPN.com has learned.

One of the NFL's best but still underrated tight ends, Kleinsasser will sign a five-year contract worth about $15 million. The deal includes a $4.25 million signing bonus and comes just hours before the standout tight end would have become a free agent.

Kleinsasser, 27, had been designated a "transition" free agent in 2003, but the Vikings did not want to use that marker on him for a second straight year. The team has been negotiating with agent Jimmy Sexton toward a long-term deal and had made the retention of Kleinsasser a high priority. Kleinsasser's contract makes the five-year veteran among the highest-paid players at his position.

Titans Lock Up Bulluck, Kinney; 'freak' Out?
        Tuesday March 02, 2004 10:10pm

(Sports Network) - The Tennessee Titans made several roster moves Tuesday to get under the $80.6 million salary cap, agreeing to long-term deals with linebacker Keith Bulluck and tight end Erron Kinney. The team also indicated that unrestricted free agent defensive end Jevon Kearse will likely not be re-signed by Tuesday's midnight (et) deadline.

"This is never an easy time of year and this year was no exception," said Titans general manager Floyd Reese. "It was very important to us to get a couple of players under contract before they entered free agency."

          Broncos release Salaam

          The Associated Press
          3/2/04 9:01 PM

DENVER (AP) -- The Denver Broncos waived tackle Ephraim Salaam on Tuesday.

Salaam started 31 of 33 regular-season games and one playoff game over the last two seasons. He joined the Broncos as an unrestricted free agent in 2002.

He missed two games in 2003 because of a knee injury.

Salaam was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round in 1998 and played for the Falcons for four seasons before coming to Denver.

Volek unrestricted at Midnight... could be a plan B if Rivers doesn't fall to the second round.

How can he be plan B if he's signed by someone 6 weeks before the draft??

Wistrom leaning toward signing with Chiefs

                Timmermann resigns with Rams

ST. LOUIS -- Adam Timmerman's five-year contract with the St. Louis Rams, finalized on Tuesday, could mean the end of defensive end Grant Wistrom's stay with the team.

Those two were the Rams' top free agents, and the team conceivably could retain both with about $4.5 million remaining under the salary cap. But Wistrom, the team's first-round pick in 1998, is believed to be leaning to signing with the Kansas City Chiefs and reuniting with coach Dick Vermeil.

Also Tuesday, the Rams met with former Michigan quarterback Drew Henson, although he did not work out. Henson is scheduled to visit the Cleveland Browns' training facility Wednesday.

Henson, 24, was drafted in the sixth round last year by the Houston Texans, who are trying to work out a trade before next month's draft. If no deal is done by the April 24 draft, Henson can be selected by any team.

Timmerman and the Rams came to an agreement two days before he was to have become an unrestricted free agent. He also signed a five-year free agent deal with the Rams in 1999 after leaving the Packers, and had not been anxious to test the market.

I was just thinking the same thing.

Maybe he meant if Volek costs to much, Rivers is plan B?

Sources: Walker agrees to new contract with Texans

HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have agreed to a three-year contract with defensive end Gary Walker that would pay him $18 million, Houston television station KRIV reported Tuesday, citing NFL sources.

The Texans had to give Walker a new deal in order to keep the player because of salary cap concerns, KRIV reported.

If the team had not agreed on a new deal with Walker, the final year of his current contract would have counted more than $12 million against the Texans' salary cap.

Walker missed 12 games last season with injuries, but was a Pro Bowl selection in 2001 with Jacksonville and 2002 with Houston.

A message left by The Associated Press at the Atlanta office of Walker's agent was not immediately returned Tuesday night.
