The Colorado Avalanche is continuing to bid for Washington Capitals goaltender Olaf Kolzig, but also has expressed serious interest in defenseman Sergei Gonchar, according to NHL executives. Colorado General Manager Pierre Lacroix is noted for making blockbuster deals before the trade deadline and is attempting to land two of the biggest stars available in the wake of Detroit's acquisition of scoring ace Robert Lang from Washington last week.
The Capitals want to deal both players before the March 9 deadline, various league sources have indicated, and it is possible that Kolzig and Gonchar will be gone by the time Washington next takes the ice, on Tuesday at MCI Center. Colorado is seen as the strongest suitor for Kolzig, with Ed Belfour's return from injury diminishing Toronto's interest, although the Maple Leafs are very much in the hunt for Gonchar.
