The Buffalo Bills' courting of free agents continued on Thursday as they met with tight end Mark Bruener and fullback Patrick Pass.

Bruener, who was released by Pittsburgh last week, is coming off his least productive season as a pro, catching just two passes for 12 yards in 2003.

In his nine-year career, Bruener has started 107 of the 125 games that he has appeared in, with 137 receptions and 16 touchdowns.

Last year, Bruener was used primarily as a blocking tight end for the Steelers.

Better then Phillip[ Crosby, not as good as Gash

Pass' big thing is versatility. When he first came to the Pats (7th round pick in 2000), they weren't sure what position he played. They tried him at WR briefly (hands are excellent), RB and FB. He operates at a RB/FB tweener, able to back up at both positions. He actually is a pretty good athlete with his combination of size/speed and good hands. However, he isn't a real polished football player. Played a couple years of Minor League baseball before giving it up and playing his college ball at Georgia.

As a runner, he is a straight ahead-type with little wiggle. He doesn't read blocking well, but will go to where the hole is supposed to be and if it is there he will hit it pretty hard and can gain yards. As a receiver, he has excellent hands, but he is a little slow to turn upfield and isn't a real elusive runner, but has some speed once he gets going.

He is a serviceable backup RB/FB, who does a real good job on ST. Actually is a decent kickoff returner, and will make plays downfield in kick coverage. That is how he has managed to stick around, as the Patriots have always valued his ST skills.

In short, he sounds like a replacement for Sammy Morris (who I would love for the Pats to sign, although he has struggled with injuries), a backup RB/FB whose main contribution is on ST (where he does a good job). However, Morris is a better player, and Pass has been more durable. Pass also will probably come cheaper (I would imagine he is a minimum-salary sign) and knows his role (won't complain about P/T and will bust his butt on ST).

Pass was actually cut by the Pats after training camp and nobody signed him for a few weeks, but was brought back after they suffered injuries to FB Larry Centers and FB Fred McCrary.

Pass wouldn't be a bad signing for Buffalo, IMO, if they are looking for a cheaper replacement for Sammy Morris (strictly a 1-Yr/Minimum guy with no bonus). He is cheap, versatile and a very good ST player. He is a team guy and knows his role. The Pats accumulate guys like this at the bottom of their roster, and it is a big reason why they are so good on ST and win so many close games.

BTW, Morris had a visit in Cleveland today.
