He was wined and dined, and now unrestricted free agent cornerback Antoine Winfield is about to be signed by the New York Jets as well.

The five-year veteran, ESPN.com has confirmed, has reached agreement in principle with the Jets on a six-year deal worth $30 million and including a $10 million signing bonus. The contract will pay Winfield $18 million in the first three years of the deal....

that is like 6 guys with that same contract.

I would assume the 18 million in the first three years includes the bonus. There will be a low salary in the first year because he gets the bonus now. That makes the deal cap friendly for 2004. If I'm right, then the remaining 12 million in salary is spread out over the last three years. That would be relatively cheap, 4 million a year. It looks like a pretty good deal for the Jets, but Winfield might be grousing for a renegotiation in about 4 years.

He didn't sign. His wife didn't like the idea of living on Long Island. Evidently she heard bf1 lives there.

Then, late last night, Winfield was stricken with a case of cold feet. He walked away from the Jets' proposal and was expected to leave immediately for a visit with the Vikings, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
