I was listening the whole time, and it was a very informative and a very professional sounding show. I was hoping that you would take some calls, but I guess they put the smack down on that. Other than that, great job!!

you know.. i never really noticed my accent until i listened to the show.. but it is funny, because i was in virginia until 1st grade.. then philly till 6th grade.. then dallas till 12th grade.. then back in virginia since 1992.. so i cant really tell what kind of accent it is..

how would you classify it?

I don't think so....but having lived in CA for 10 years, I sure as hell couldn't understand half of what your were saying. You need a speech coach if you intend to continue on as a sportscaster. See who Henry is using, he might be able to help! :D

Did EB say that Minnesota has a 94 million cap? If so how did they get 16 miilion more in cap space than the Bills. And how will parity be maintained if one team will eventually have twice the cap as another??

Tatonka
03-06-2004, 02:55 PM
from money they got back from years before.. for players that counted against their cap for bonuses likely to be earned that were not earned.. didnt you listen to him at all? lol.

socalfan
03-06-2004, 03:37 PM
Right. Okay.

Maybe it wasn't the accent, since I couldn't understand half of what EB was saying either!

I was under the impression that every team had the same cap....and that is why we would move to parity. If that ain't so, then I would assume that in ten years, MN will have maybe a cap of 180 million and the Bills a cap of 90 million. I see how this helps the Bills not overspend, but how does it keep parity? And wouldn't every contract be written so that every dollar a player makes above minimum would be bonus money. If they get it sowhat, if they don't then the teams cap increases faster than other teams' caps. What am I missing??

Tatonka
03-06-2004, 03:42 PM
teams that dont do that well are typically because their big players didnt play well enough to hit their bonuses.. but they get charged with that money because the bonuses are considered "likely to be earned".. then when they dont reach that bonus, the money that htey got charged last year, gets credited back..

and sometimes if all your players hit bonus that were "likely to be earned" and also the "unlikely to be earned" which means they probablly had a great season from alot of their players.. then they may get some of their cap taken away..

it is not something that carries over for years.. it has to do with how their players performed the year before.. minnesota just happens to be a crazy example this year. i guess because of moss, bennett, and culpepper not hitting bonuses that they assumed they would and were charged for against their cap last year..

i hope that makes sense.

I listened to the show, and I agree with the others. You needed to take phone calls. That way all of the pressure is not on you to make it all up as you go. You can play off of the callers a bit. :chat: Good job though. You guys gained a listener.:phones:

Thanks I think it does.

So next year they go back to a cap number that matches other teams' caps and from there an adjustment is made...right??

Well, that would depend on how they do this year.

I seem to remember Eb & CP talking about this last year with Philly. They were the first team to start doing this. It was something like this: They took whatever CAP money they had left over, just prior to the start of the season, and put it into those incentive bonuses that Tatonka and Eb were talking about. But they did it in such a way that those incentives were not very likely met. I don't remember how, exactly, they pulled that off. This way, they were able to, in effect, carry that extra cap money over to the next season via the "rebates" given by the NFL for those incentives that were not met.

Kind of tricky, but that's how I remember it. . .sort of. . .:anvil:

i know i know.. lol.. i had every intention of taking callers.. but you would be surprised by how fast that hour goes when you get on there.. i just over prepaired and had too many notes that i was going over.. truth be told.. i only got to do about 50% of the draft stuff that i had planned out..

as far as gaining a listener.. i was just a guest host.. good old mark wieler will be back next week.. dont expect to hear alot of the same things.. he is unique in his take on alot of issues, and we debate from opposite sides of the fence alot.. but that is what makes it fun talking to him..

Now I'm totally confused. What good is having an additional 10 million in cap when it can only be used in that year and it has to be totally consumed in that year.

Look at this example.... I am a GM and I have cap numbers of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 million over the next 5 years. So all of my contracts are built so that I'm close to but not over those caps. Now in year two, the NFL says ...oh, you have done something truely odd, and your reward is 10 million in additional cap in year 2....So new cap looks like 20, 35, 30, 35, 40. So I spend up to the 35 in year two...I know that in year 3 I have structured my contracts back in year 1 so that I am close to but not over the 30 in cap . But my year 2 contracts are set for 35 million. To make the cap of 30 in year 3 without having to cut, that extra 10 million in year 2 would have to been completely consumed with no amortizing or carry over. So what is that? Is this a case where I get to pay 10 million in salaries for the one year?
