An update to the ongoing story about my wife....

Tania had a mastectomy @ 2 years ago to remove one breast that had recurrent tumors in it. Follow-up care, tests, etc. have all proved negative, so she's healthy with no recurrence.

Anyway, she had a procedure yesterday called a TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) Flap to reconstruct her breast. Basically, you are given a tummy tuck and then they move the tissue and a muscle from your abdomen up under the skin to replace the removed breast.

I'm happy to report that she went through the 5-hour procedure in Toronto yesterday with flying colours. I saw her for @ 1/2 an hour yesterday afternoon after she came out of the recovery room and she was pretty groggy & in pain/discomfort, as is to be exected, but in good spirits.

She's going to be in hospital probably until Sunday and then she'll stay at her mom & dad's in the Toronto area until her follow-up appointment on the 24th, so I get to be Mr. Mom for @ 3 weeks. I'm keeping the kids at home, so she doesn't have to worry at all about them & can concentrate on her recovery.

That's GREAT news, Doug! I'm glad to hear things went well for her. A tummy tuck sounds like an added bonus. I'll keep her in my prayers as she starts her healing process. How long is the recovery time for something like this?

Did you ask the doctor for the "extra stitch"? Oh wait, wrong surgery. Hope she gets better soon!

Well, she's off work for @ a month and can't do any lifting over 10 lbs or vacuming, etc. for @ 2-3 months.

She has to go in for some more follow-up surgery in the summer...to rebuild a nipple and to reduce her natural breast (they can only do the reconstruction up to a "C" size) to match her up to her newly-constructed breast.
