View Full Version : Players we gave up on that flourished elsewhere

In the last 5 or so years, who do you think "made it" with other teams after we gave up on them?

I'm not talking about guys we knew were good and couldn't afford, e.g., Price, Winfield, etc. I'm talking about guys we thought couldn't do well, released, then proved us all wrong.

I can't think of any right now.

Oh wait...Todd Collins.

I can't think of any either we let Marcellus Wiley go he had 1-2 good years with the chargers but since has been plagued by injuries.

I'm trying to figure out what that means, i.e., it seems like we are a good judge of talent since we don't let diamonds in the rough go. Then again, you could also say we drafted/hired FAs that weren't any good and thus never flourished elsewhere.

The biggest two "oops" I can remember are Favre (Atlanta to GB) and Young (Tampa Bay to SF).

Parella has done pretty well since the Bills dropped him.

Antowain Smith?

Not that he's been awesome when he left here, but who was that LB for the Panthers last year?

He's won rings but he definitely hasn't been a impact player IMO.

Greg Favors but he was cut from the Titans too.

Gary Anderson.

I believe Favors was signed by another team as a free agent a litlle while ago. Another example of the Williams regime dropping the ball on keeping a productive LB.

Antowain was very instrumental in their first Superbowl year. I think he also played a big part in their win over Indy last year in the conference final. No, he hasn't been a superstar, but he definitely made a big impact the first year after he left.

DB Jimmy Williams did OK for SF since we cut him.

Oh, how about Shayne Graham.

Talk about a name from the past this guy I think missed kicks for us on purpose. Didn't he miss a bunch in preseason and we cut him?

I thought about Gary Anderson, but the original poster asked about players let go in the last 5 years.

I think he missed 5 out of 7 kicks in the preseason or something like that. He was awful, just think if we had Anderson instead of Norwood. But then we would have never gotten Christie.

I would list as good, but certainly not great, Tom Nutten, A. Smith, Matt Stevens, Riemersma, Nails, Cowart and Jay Foreman.

Matt Stevens was released due to drugs. Cowart we wanted to sign but we wanted to see how he was physically and he declined to do so.

Nice list. I wouldn't put Riemersma on that list since he didn't do crap last year. Stevens has kicked around a bunch of teams too but never stuck anywhere.

The thing to remember is that I'm talking about guys that we let go on purpose before they became really good, meaning we felt they weren't going to pan out. Example would have been if we had traded Moulds before his 3rd year (thinking he was a bust) and then he explodes on another team.

Of all the players mentioned so far, I think Zeigler is probably the best example of that since we only had him for a few seasons IIRC. (Although I can't find him on the Gints roster nor on nfl.com's player list. Is he an FA or is he out of football?)

Cowart is sort of a tweener - we knew he was good but then he got injured so we let him go. However the jury is still out whether or not he will ever regain to pre-injury form.

P.S. Let's say 20 years instead of 5 just to make it more interesting.

Teddy was already doing well before we let him go. It was a cap issue, not a "he is not going to pan out" kind of thing.

I think Nutten, Nails and Foreman are the best examples. Nutten and Nails were cut and Foreman was traded for Charlie Rogers I believe. Nutten was considered pretty good, I think he retired recently. Was he signed by the Jets and retired because of injuries? He is now a coach in NFL Europe. Nails was released because he was one of those fat slobs that Gregg Williams hated. He caught on with Miami and became one of their best Olinemen. Then he got hurt and he is now trying to work through that injury. Foreman turned into a pretty good linebacker for the expansion Texans.

Jamie Nails did alright in his first season with the Dolphins. Actually he was named an alternate for the AFC Pro Bowl team two years ago before snapping his achilles tendon. Had he not done that, he may have put it together for a second year in a row. I know some of you will laugh at this call, but he was really good two years ago. It just didn't last long.
