It seems like a glamorous existence. Watching football, taking some notes, and rubbing elbows with big time college coaches. From the outside being an NFL college scout looks like a season ticket to any and every big college game each year, and an easy way to make a living.

Oh contraire.

“You have to be very disciplined in this line of work because when you do the day-in and day-out part of the job for four months it’s hard,” said Bills scouting director Doug Majeski. “You’re away from your family, and it’s demanding work. People think we go to games.” Scouts don’t just work on Saturday when college football takes center stage. During the fall they often put in six day weeks. They’re responsible for covering vast regions of the country, and uncovering the college talent that’s capable of playing on the NFL level. What are scouts doing during the week that keeps them so busy? They’re making campus visits. It’s the most critical part of scouting’s information-gathering process. “An evaluation process needs to include a campus visit,” said Bills assistant GM Tom Modrak. “You get on campus and you get a chance to talk to staff members, see video, and see the prospects live in practice. That’s what it’s about.”
