Inspiration From a Former Buffalo Bill

Twenty-five years ago, a special young man's life was changed forever following a chance meeting with a member of the Buffalo Bills. That meeting happened at a Special Olympics race. Recently, the two men got together to run another race, a quarter of a century later.

Fred Siegel is waiting and wondering. Waiting to see whether an old friend of his, Bills Hall of Famer Joe DeLamileure, is going to show up to run a race with him. To find out just how Fred and Joe got to this point, we have go back to 1980 and what used to be U.B.'s Rotary Field.

Joe DeLamileure was a Special Olympics volunteer and Fred was running in his first-ever race. But once Fred hit the track, he was having a pretty rough go of things. “This kid Fred,” says Joe, “I didn't even know his last name, he was kind of struggling through the mile.”

That's is a very good story!

That's the kind of story that we don't hear often enough. There are probably as many or more Joe Ds and Jim Ritchers in professional sports as their are bad apples who seem to get most of the press.

It makes me proud that the Bills usually go for high character guys.
Should have known, way back in 1960 when we drafted Richie Lucas Number 1, that this would be a long, hard ride. But who could have known it would be THIS bad?
