Clements, a former CFL star quarterback, helped resurrect the career of Tommy Maddox in 2002. With Maddox at quarterback, the Steelers finished seventh in the NFL in pass offense, their highest ranking since 1980. Clements was also instrumental in the development of former Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart, who had his best season as a pro in 2001, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl and Steelers MVP honors. Prior to joining the Steelers, Clements coached quarterbacks in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints (1997-99) and the Kansas City Chiefs (2000).
