Bruce Smith showed up for the Jim Kelly Celebrity Golf Tournament Monday looking even more fit than he did during his 15 years playing pro football in Buffalo.
His stomach is a washboard. He looks like he's down to about 240 pounds. He has the body fat of a wide receiver, amazing for a man 11 days shy of his 41st birthday.
So is he going to miss it next month when for the first time in 20 years he does not head off for NFL training camp?
"It's going to be great," Smith said before teeing off at Brierwood Country Club. "My body is thanking me already. I'm waking up and my knees don't ache. My joints aren't bothering me as much. It's just nice to wake up and not take 30 minutes to get out of bed. I still hear that noise - snap, crackle and pop - from the different joints that were affected while I was playing. But it's just a good feeling."
Smith called it quits in December after his fourth season with the Washington Redskins, a stint that allowed him to reach 200 sacks for his career - the NFL record.
