DON'T GET ME STARTED drops the eyelids as thoughts travel to April when the name of Joey Harrington surfaced as a possible choice for the Buffalo Bills rebuilding process. After all, the Bills were still reeling from a bad 3-13 season and were desperate for QB help.
Fans screamed for offensive line help; defensive line help; secondary help. Name it and the fans were ready to draft this guy and that guy. But the name of Harrington kept coming up. Many surmised that he was better than the overall #1 choice, David Carr.
If the Bills were interested in Harrington, they had to play chess with the Detroit Lions picking ahead of the Bills. As draft day approached, the Lions were angling for Harrington. That made Tom Donahoe scramble to get in on the "Bledsoe Derby." Donahoe surveyed the chessboard and tried to peddle off some pawns to get the veteran QB.
Then came the deal that now gives hope to victory starved Bills fans. Tom Donahoe made the moves that brought Drew Bledsoe to the Buffalo Bills. He looked at that chessboard, moving his castle to the top and uttered the words of victory: "Checkmate!!!!" Donahoe traded the 2003 #1 pick for Drew Bledsoe and Bills fans rejoiced, marching to the ticket windows selling out games. If there was one position the hierarchy felt was needed, it was a proven quarterback. They got him. Not since the days of Jim Kelly has Western New York been blessed with a leader who can throw the ball and command the respect of his teammates – and the community.
Could anyone have imagined that the Detroit Lions would play before a sell-out crowd at the Ralph? They've sold out all their games so far and it looks to be another banner year for Ralphie and the boys in control of the vault. ...MORE...
