    Hawks pick up Sabres veterans

    The Blackhawks made their first venture into the free-agent market Friday, signing two veterans who have a combined 1,267 NHL games under their belts. After last year's dismal season, the Hawks needed some veterans to help their young team develop, and the signings of Matthew Barnaby and Curtis Brown on the second day of the NHL's free-agent signing period is a start.

    Neither could be considered a high-priced acquisition. While the Hawks didn't announce contract terms, Canadian Press reported that Brown agreed to a four-year deal worth $6.8 million and Barnaby received a three-year contract worth $5.25 million.
