Bills look to speed up talks with No. 1 picks

Rookie holdouts are a way of life in the National Football League.

None of the Buffalo Bills' last three first-round draft picks had a contract before the start of training camp. The Bills hope to avoid going down that same path with new No. 1s Lee Evans and J.P. Losman.

Team President and General Manager Tom Donahoe said he hasn't had any substantial contract talks with the players' agents. But with the team scheduled to report to training camp on July 31, look for talks to intensify this week.

"Signing first-round picks is never easy," Donahoe said. "But we're very optimistic that we can get something done. Fortunately, we have two good agents to deal with and two players who understand the importance of being in camp on time."

Three of the Bills' six draft picks remain unsigned. There is little doubt that defensive tackle Tim Anderson will be at St. John Fisher College on July 31. Donahoe said negotiations with the team's third-round selection are progressing nicely.
