What happens if a draft pick gets injured before being signed?

With players like Losman participating in mini-camps, what happens if they get injured before they finalize their rookie contract?

Players sign waivers with the team prior to participation.

to my knowledge they are SOL...that is why some of the big names will not come in until they are signed.

Oh boy. I find that hard to believe but I have no idea so who knows. You'd think there'd be some type of protection or else top picks wouldn't report until signed. What's their incentive to balance the potential loss of tens of millions?

I think they've got something covering them in case they get hurt in mini-camps..other than that, nothing.

I imagine they have an insurance policy or something right? Willis McGahee was injured when you guys drafted him and you still payed him. Granted, you knew coming in he was going to be out awhile but sort of the same thing.

I imagine each players signs an insurance waiver of types covering both them and the team or else the team/NFL would be completely liable should the guy get injured and decide to sew.

While there is no formal process to cover this, generally the team will act in good faith signing the player. I know the Patriots signed Brock Williams to a market deal, in accordance to his draft slot, despite suffering a knee injury in minicamp that caused him to miss his rookie season. Cleveland has already said they will sign Jones to a market contract and won't try to use his injury as leverage.
