Not enough info to know what the 1st yr cap number is but the guaranteed money is more than I predicted

Hmmm, interesting.....

The contract is for five years and has a base value of $7.7 million, with $5.586 million of that in guarantees, largely an initial signing bonus and two option bonuses. The contract can top out, with escalators, at $24.58 million.

Negotiated by Gary Wichard, the deal in many ways is superior to those signed by Kyle Boller and Rex Grossman, quarterbacks chosen in the 2003 draft. It is a sizeable jump over the deal awarded Grossman, who was in the 22nd slot last year.

I totally agree. I was hoping it would be a 6-year deal with an option to make it 7 years.

Here is another article with numbers:

First-round pick J.P. Losman agreed to a five-year deal with the Buffalo Bills. The deal was reached early Saturday, and Losman is expected to report in time for the start of Bills training camp, which opens Sunday. The deal includes a $5.6 million signing bonus and could be worth as much as $24.5 million if the quarterback meets all his incentives.

Thanks to whomever is "Billszone" and submitted the link to TBD so I didn't need to do the work!

Agree Mikey. If Bills were planning on starting him a 5 year deal makes sense but otherwise it is too short for a 1st round pick who will get little action like the RB we paid an entire year and did not play a down.

I'm sure we'll end up keeping him through two contracts if he proves to not be a bust which I think will happen (I don't think he'll be a bust).

OOohh...maybe that's just it. They signed him to a 5 year deal because they *do* plan on starting him!!!!

(well, I can dream about it anyway)

I hope so.

But let me ask you this.....

What if Drew has a ridiculously good year, over 4K yards, 30 TDs and 15 INTs? Would you still want to start JP next year?

(cue the theme from Jeopardy)

Yeah I would. Look at the Bengals with Jon Kitna. The only thing that will stop JP from starting next season is...if the Bills go to the AFC championship or the Super Bowl.

Yeah lets see what Palmer does first before using that arguement.

If Losman had a 6 or 7 year deal, I would probably say no. But Losman is here for only 5 years with this contract. You can't let him sit on the bench making all that money for 2 years. That leaves him only 3 years left on his deal.

Besides...it's a moot point, because Bledsoe should NOT have over 4,000 yards and 30 TDs in this offense. It should be about 3,000 and maybe 20 or so. Henry and McGahee should have the most TDs.

Dear Fans,

As you all know, it is my number one priority to put the best Bills team on the field at all times. That said, I want to assure you that if Drew has that kind of season this year, I will have also won the lotto in 3 states, married Halle Berry and hit 10 consecutive jackpots in Vegas. As such I will no longer be in football and the decision will be someone else's.

Sincerely,

TD

Most teams and draftees go with 4 year deals for first round picks and three year deals for remaining rounds. Some clubs, like Cleveland- try to squeeze an extra year.

QBs usually get an extra year if they are drafted day 1 becasuse of the development time.

Top 10 picks are also the exception- to spread out the big signing bonus.

Players and agents won't want to go much farther than that because they want the big free agent payday. The advantage to clubs keeping rookie deals under 4 years is restricted free agency. You can offer a good player below market value or get compensated with a high pick
