Ryan Denney was the starting left defensive end for the Buffalo Bills last season. A hungry Chris Kelsay is determined to see that Denney doesn't keep the job.
The Bills have thrown the position up for grabs in training camp, with Denney and Kelsay as the main competitors. The Bills hope the winner will solidify one of the few question marks on defense.
"It's very close between those guys," defensive coordinator Jerry Gray said after the Monday morning practice at St. John Fisher College. "Ryan and Chris are battling for that spot. It wouldn't surprise me if that continues the rest of training camp."
The Bills need Denney or Kelsay to raise the level of his game to make the defensive line solid across the board. The Bills obviously thought enough of the players to use a second-round draft pick in 2002 and 2003 to get them. Now the team wants to see some production.
