Even though Matthews will have only one full practice in Buffalo, he is expected to play against the Lions.

"If I was at training camp or not, I would look the same," Matthews said. "I'm not real big or real strong, but I usually know where to throw it."

Bills coach Mike Mularkey said Bledsoe would start the game and play a couple of series before being replaced by Greg Zolman.

Buffalo running back Travis Henry (bruised ribs) will be held out for the second straight game so he's ready for the opener against Jacksonville.

That means Willis McGahee will make his second start.

McGahee has looked like someone coming off reconstructive knee surgery and a 19-month break from football, at times bracing for hits before they come.

But Mularkey has been encouraged by his progress.

"He gets stronger as he goes, and some guys are like that," Mularkey said. "They take a couple of hits and get a feel for what they are doing defensively, so sometimes it does take a little bit."

:eek2: Umm yeah. Let's hope you do. I had to watch enough of you stinking it up in DC with the Redskins.

This would be the time to give him his baptism under fire. Better now than in a regular season game which, we all hope, will never be necessary. But if it is, I'd rather he get his feet wet in preseason.
