Pats eye ways for cap to fit: Adjusted Dillon deal helps
By Michael Felger
Thursday, September 2, 2004

FOXBORO - Take a good look at some Patriots [stats, news] veterans during the preseason finale tonight against Jacksonville. It could be the last time you see them in a Pats uniform.

The salary cap ax is about to fall, and while it remains to be seen if the cut is as dramatic as the gash that cost Lawyer Milloy his job last year, the Pats are poised to make moves that go beyond the usual bottom-of-the-roster maneuverings.

Some people have suggested possibly Law, or some of their aging somewhat name, linebackers.

I heard two names...

LB Ted Johnson
WR David Patten

Yeah, Ted Johnson is one of the names I heard as well. Over on finheaven, the resident Pats fan says it could be Johnson and then moving Klecko to his position.

All I know is I don't want any more NE leftovers.

BB is too smart and doesn't let the good ones go.

You hate Milloy now, too?

You hate Milloy now, too? :scratch:Nah, I don't "hate" either of them (Drew/Milloy). As you know I feel we've wasted too much money and time on Drew. As for Milloy I think it was an "okay" pickup, but I don't think it was a steal by any means. He wasn't exactly cheap for what we got. BB got Harrison to replace him at a lower rate, a guy 1 year older and these are the results from last year:

Rodney: 92 tkls, 34 assts, 3 sks, 3 ints
Lawyer: 69 tkls, 35 assts, 3 sks, 0 ints

Again, not harping on Milloy. He's fine. But BB knew he was replaceable for less money and let him go, which is why I don't want to take anymore of his players. He knows what he is doing, which is why I hate HIM.

I suspect that they will combine incentives and restructuring to get around cap problems. Since they still feel they are at top of game they would not want to rock their team too much.

I would say they will restructure Brady. I cannot imagine that the Pats would go through the entire off-season charades with Law only to cut/trade him now. Would have been better to do it before the draft.
