Practice Squad Proves Beneficial for Team

Over the course of the next week you'll hear the term Practice Squad used frequently. In most cases, this may be the last time you hear this designation used the rest of the season.

But don't let the lack of lip service fool you, the carefully selected players that make up a team's Practice Squad are an integral part of the team as well as the development of the individual player.

"The only difference is that you're not active during the game," said linebacker Mario Haggan, a former Practice Squad player. "You're basically still learning the system. It's another opportunity to continue to be in the system and learn and develop as a player and hopefully in weeks to come you can move up and contribute to the team as an active player."

The Bills originally selected Haggan in the seventh round (228th overall) of the 2003 draft. Although he was able to survive the roster cut down to 53, he was released on Sept. 4 when the team acquired safety Lawyer Milloy. Four days later, Haggan was signed to the Practice Squad, where he spent the first nine games of the season with the Bills.
