Not a bunch of Mularkey: Bills coach to succeed

Things to think about as we approach the first weekend of the regular season:

• The new coach making the biggest impact won't be Joe Gibbs, Dennis Green or Tom Coughlin. It'll be Buffalo's Mike Mularkey, the former Steelers offensive coordinator who'll run the ball, protect the quarterback and stop the run.
• The most improved team isn't a surprise. Based on their record, it should be the Falcons. They were 3-1 with Michael Vick and 2-10 without him.
• The free-agent acquisition who could contribute the most to his team's improved record is Raiders nose tackle Ted Washington, who has made a habit of playing for winners.
• The best assistant coaching move of the offseason is a tie between the Vikings and Chiefs. Their weakness was defense, so they hired two of the league's best defensive coordinators — Ted Cottrell (Minnesota) and Gunther Cunningham (Kansas City).
• A player with the best chance to leap from the shadows into the spotlight is new Miami running back Lamar Gordon.
