Just saw this myself and was about to post it. I didn't like his GMing, but nobody would wish this on anyone. Here's a link to the ESPN article:

The article says that it is inoperable too, which is not a good sign obviously. That's tough to beat. I hope he can do it.

I saw him smoking a cigar before. I really hope he'll be ok.

If it's inoperable, in his physical shape, it isn't a good scenario. I can only hope he somehow beats it. We all talk football, but just like an injured player that can't move after a hit, the game stops and everyone hopes he moves again.
                Best of wishes John.

Well, if it's inoperable lung cancer, no reason to quit smoking I suppose. It's not like emphasema is gonna beat out the cancer. Cancer's a tough, tough thing.

Life threatening diseases really suck... I hope he can pull through this. Hey, the man did do some good things... we gotMoulds, Winfield, PW, Jeremy McD and several other important players under his regime...

John Butler stricken with Lung Cancer

I know a lot of us have had our differences with the man for his management of the Bills, but this is a fate I don't want to wish on anyone. My prayers go out to him and his family....

                              Ex-GM Butler has Lung Cancer

                              The Associated Press

(July 30, 2002) — San Diego Chargers general manager John Butler has been diagnosed with lung cancer and started chemotherapy, a team spokesman said Monday night.

New coach Marty Schottenheimer broke the news to the players at a meeting, at Butler's request, spokesman Bill Johnston said.

Butler, who turns 56 on Aug. 13, didn't immediately return a call to his home and Schottenheimer was in a meeting and unavailable for comment.
