San Francisco 49ers linebacker Derek Smith was fined $25,000 by the NFL for knocking down an umpire last month in a game at New Orleans.
Smith was "really surprised" by the NFL's ruling, which arrived in a letter earlier this week. The league said Smith deliberately knocked down umpire Steve Wilson during San Francisco's loss to the Saints on Oct. 20.
