The Buffalo Bills may have a 6-foot-3, 340-pound problem on their hands.
Defensive tackle Sam Adams was benched during the second half of Sunday's 20-13 win over the Miami Dolphins.
Bills coach Mike Mularkey said Adams was pulled because the team felt backup Ron Edwards played better. Edwards finished the game with a career-high two sacks and four tackles.
"We just felt like we were getting done what we wanted done with Ron Edwards," Mularkey said. "He was being extremely disruptive and just kept that flow going."
Adams didn't want to comment on his benching as he left Ralph Wilson Stadium, but his facial expression spoke volumes.
Adams is known for his run-stuffing ability, but the Bills apparently felt he wasn't getting the job done against the Dolphins. Many of Dolphins running back Sammy Morris' career-high 91 yards came on draw plays up the middle, though other defenders missed tackles.
After a Morris run late in the first quarter, Bills coaches tried to replace Adams with Justin Bannan, but Adams refused to come off the field. Bannan ended up replacing Pat Williams.
Adams eventually came to the sideline, where he had a heated exchange with defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and defensive line coach Tim Krumrie.
In a fit of anger, Adams threw his helmet to the turf. Jonas Jennings and Lawyer Milloy tried to calm Adams at the Bills' bench.
