1.billy simms-the turf at the lions stadium cost him a career
2.gale sayers-the clips of him were awesome
3.bo jackson-for a few years he may have been the best athlete period.
4.dj dozier
5.freeman mcneil
6.napoleon mccallum-he almost had his leg amputated after his knee injury

billy simms was a sight to see run. he had speed, power, and moves. what a shame.

Jim Brown wasn't injured.. Earl Camball's career was shortened by him leaving it all on the field.

Oops I didn't read due to injury. My bad.

Dj dozier though...

Yeah, DJ Dozier was considered a decent college back but never a good pro. Kijana Carter should be considered but he never really even got a shot to show anything in the pros so he would probably never make the list. McCallum was better than a journeyman. That guy was pretty amazing for the Raiders for a couple of years. I think he had a season where he averaged around 6.0 ypc.

Here are his career stats. Not too amazing to me.

You are thinking of Napoleon Kaufman. He did have some amazing years but retired early.

Terrell Davis is another whose career was cut short by injuries.

Except Kaufman didn't retire because of injury it was because he was "Born Again"

Bo Jackson could've went down as one of the greatest if he hadn't had that freak hip injury. I still remember that play off game, felt bad for Bo.

Anyone remember when he ran over Bozworth? Or when he ran wild on Monday Night football ( I think he scored 5 TDs or something obscene)

Bo KNEW football.

Terrell Davis
Robert Smith Vikings was a good 1 also

WHo knows how Robert Edwards would have been in the Nfl after his Hawaii pro bowl accident!!!!

I think Robert Smith left on his own terms. He had been injured, but left the game after having one of his best years. He was smart, he left rich and healthy.

Gale Sayers
Bo Jackson
Billy Simms

Ricky Bell - RIP

It's that Penn State thing. Add Blair Thomas to the PSU RB's that never panned out list, too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Larry Johnson in that category sooner than later.

Curt Warner...I know (I'm a homer), but here's what he did before he was injured:

Yr Tm Gms Att Yds Avg. TD Rec Yds Avg TD
1983 sea | 16 | 335 1449 4.3 13 | 42 325 7.7 1 |
| 1984 sea | 1 | 10 40 4.0 0 | 1 19 19.0 0 |
| 1985 sea | 16 | 291 1094 3.8 8 | 47 307 6.5 1 |
| 1986 sea | 16 | 319 1481 4.6 13| 41 342 8.3 0 |
| 1987 sea | 12 | 234 985 4.2 8 | 17 167 9.8 2 |
| 1988 sea | 16 | 266 1025 3.9 10| 22 154 7.0 2 |
| 1989 sea | 16 | 194 631 3.3 3 | 23 153 6.7 1

Only one game in 1984. 1989 wasn't very good, but other than that he had a pretty successful career before his injury. He did try a comeback with the Rams but it only lasted 7 games. BTW, Warner also went to Penn State.

You definitely have to go w/Bo Jackson though. Too bad, he was fun to watch.

Good call on Warner. He was a very good back in his day, and yes, he was a PSU guy. One of the rare quality PSU backs. He was actually on of my favorite players.

Mack Lee Hill - played 2 seasons at RB for the Chiefs, making the Pro Bowl in 1964, then died undergoing knee surgery before his 3rd season.

Oh, and Joe Delaney, another Chief RB who played only 2 years, making the Pro Bowl in 1982. Died in 1983 trying to save 2 boys from drowning.

Bo and Terrell are the best two whose careers got cut short IMO. Power, speed and moves...they had it all.

Don't forget Earthquake Enyart. :ill:
He blew a knee out playing LINEBACKER- he got traded to the Raiders and they converted him to LB - but had the huge knee injury in preseason.

Ernie Davis would have been the next Jim Brown. From the same school as Brown (Syracuse) he won the Heisman and was also drafted by both the Bills and Redskins (then traded to the Browns) in 1962 and would have picked up where Jim Brown left off. He was a Jim Brown clone. He spurned the Bills and signed with the Browns, but caught Lukemia and died within a year. :(

His incredible stats-

Recruited by future professional football Hall of Fame member Jimmy Brown to play football at Syracuse University, he took Brown's number, 44, succeeded him as a running back, and broke most of his school rushing records. Career numbers for Ernie Davis at Syracuse: school record 6.6 yards per carry, 38 receptions for 392 yards, 35 touchdowns and 3,414 total all-purpose yards. In comparison, Jim Brown's career numbers: 5.8 yards per carry, 11 receptions for 120 yards, 25 touchdowns and 3,225 all-purpose yards. Davis , a big, rugged 6'2", 212-pounder, played left halfback and was his team's leading ground-gainer for three seasons.
