Quarterbacks Dan Marino and Steve Young and wide receiver Michael Irvin were among 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.

Marino, who holds many of the NFL's career passing records, and Young, who led San Francisco to the 1994 NFL title, were among four finalists who made the list in their first year of eligibility.

The others were Irvin, a member of the Dallas teams that won three Super Bowls between 1992 and 1995, and the late Derrick Thomas, who played for Kansas City and died in 2000 of injuries suffered in an auto accident.

If Lynn Swann is in the Hall of fame with 330 career catches then Michael Irvin deserves to go in with his 750 career receptions.

What has Ralph Wilson done to derserve a trip to the Hall of Fame? NOTHING! He was one of the cheapest owners in the NFL for most of his time as the Bills owner and even after having success with Marv Levy he went back to low balling his head coaches and or hiring guys with no experience. He did not learn from his mistakes. Just look at all the dud coaches in Bills history.

The guy has not committed to winning. The only thing that he has committed to is making money!

And

theblackbear does not care if people don't want to hear it. It's the truth and it needs to be said!

Ralph also has some shady business with Cookie Gilchrist in the past. Just read what Cookie has to say about Ralph. You're definitely going to like it!

How can you say no to Steve Young?????

And Blackbear, Ralph likely saved the AFL when he bailed out the Oakland Raiders. He should be in. The fact that he kept the NFL in small market Buffalo when he could have jumped to Seattle is a testimony to the man.

eh, its the usual b/s and banter

as usual ralph and others who actually have done stuff for the nfl to help it survive get shafted.

my 5 players/owners/etc. list is as follows:
yes:
marino, thomas, monk, pollard, greenwood

irvin will get it at somepoint, but man, how the hell is he up for nomination before some of these people is beyond me.

just wait till reggie white is up for nomination, he will end up getting the sympathy vote, just like derrick thomas might. although in thomas' case he died during the prime/end of his career.

White shouldn't need a sympathy vote as he may possibly be the best defensive player of all time.

Two things:
It's Irvin...no "g"
There's a few WRs in line before him that are more deserving of the honor...Art Monk has been waiting to get in for far too long

Agreed!

Irvin does not deserve it IMO. Especially on a first year ballot.

If he gets in ahead of Art Monk than the hall of Fame has lost ALL credibility.

Somewhere along the line, Ralph POed somebody. It can be the only answer. Perhaps it was when he called those referees out in the '70's I don't know. While he tends to cheap out on occasion, he certainly deserves to be in the HOF, if for nothing else, he's one of the longest tenured owners in the game.

As for Eb's list, my disagreements are in bold. Keuch was a big reason the fish won back to back, and Claude Humphrey was the Reggie White of his day.

A lot of people might not know, but Ralph Wilson had a part in propping up the AFL throught the mid-60's when the NFL started "Stealing" players off AFL rosters. Along with Lamar Hunt, Ralph was part of the negoiation team that helped the NFL and AFL merge. and the Superbowl that came along with it.
Without Ralph Wilson who knows what the NFL, would be like and weither or not there would be an NFL team in Buffalo. This reason and others are the reason Ralph Wilson should be in the Hall of Fame.

Ralph is the ONLY owner the Bills have ever had, and he consistently fills a huge stadium in a small city with miserable weather. Name one other INDIVIDUAL owner that can boast that kind of success.

Jim and Marv had almost a decade straight of winning seasons and made it to 4 straight SB's- a feat that has yet to be accomplished. They also ran a unique style of offense that was very successful has never been emulated. Even without the SB win, it's still more than worthy.

One knock against Wilson-if you can believe this-is that he has always been a staunch supporter of franchise stability. He has consistently voted against franchise moves.

Here's the Selection Committee List:

If I were to venture a guess, it'd be that writers from expansion cities and cities that have benefitted from "Franchise Free Agency" are most responsible for Wilson being denied his rightful place in Canton.

I think being forced to sell the team in shame and after becoming a convicted felon for bribery of government officials in the Louisiana casino scandal might have something to do with it.

Interesting note's from a recent Bob Mathews colum in the Rochester D@C

Former New York Giants linebacker and nine-time Pro Bowl selection Harry Carson says he'll skip this summer's Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony even if he is elected Feb. 5. He says he was snubbed for too long. His displeasure is not likely to influence the voters either way. ...

Washington Redskins defensive coordinator and former Buffalo Bills head coach Gregg Williams ranks No. 3 on SI.com Peter King's list of the "best and brightest defensive minds in the NFL."

I agree, although the rules for getting into the HoF are only about what people have done on the field, not what they've done in their personal lives. I guess they are bending those rules a bit in his case.
